A dynamic media market

The Turkish media market is not only being considered as one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic markets worldwide but also established itself as the central player between the European and Arabic markets. Substantial increase of population, rapidly rising per capita income as well as constantly growing export figures strike as guarantors for the sustainable growth and a stable economy. Besides, these factors also intensify the media market. In relation to its population number, Turkey registers more internet connections than every other country in the world and the use of social networks is higher than anywhere else. The classic media also benefits from the boom of the Turkish economy. Primarily four major media companies beg for the favour of more than 18 million TV households and in the course of European Union accession negotiations, more and more barriers for foreign investors fall. The Turkish media market therefore becomes increasingly attractive especially for German media entrepreneurs. Against the backdrop of the high amount of citizens of Turkish origin in Germany and especially in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) there lies a great potential for cooperation and exchange of programs.

Objective

The trip is a project of NRW.International supported by the Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy and Industry of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and initiated by the Cologne Chamber of Industry and Commerce. The media sector of NRW should also benefit from the recent developments described above and just now significantly strengthen its relationships with Turkish media beyond these few already existing contacts. The aim is to get to know the much-discussed Turkish media market at first hand and to explore the possibilities for cooperation and engagements there. Beside general introductions the main focus lies on the arrangement of selected individual contacts of high quality.

Program Highlights

From 11th to 15th of June 2014 the trip led to Istanbul. In order to establish many contacts with the Turkish media branch in the most efficient and most target-oriented way, the “Istanbul TV Forum & Fair”, which is a central platform of the Turkish TV market, was visited. Moreover, meetings with the greatest Turkish broadcasters ”atv” and ”Kanal D” were planned. Furthermore the program also included conversations with production companies such as ”Sera Film Services” and ”The Global Agency”.
